Mary has a daughter Katia who has been getting along fine in math until late her sophomore year but still made a B-. Junior year arrived and suddenly her grades have dived to D’s and lower. Mary was pretty good at math as a girl but that was a long time ago and common core has been hard for her to get a grip on.
Through our service we found that Katia never learned how to manipulate rational expressions and was getting passed on grade to grade for the last three years without anyone noticing that this central skill was missed. Since Math III depends on being able to use this skill regularly, in various contexts without leading examples, she was lost. Through tailored examples and some online personal help, over two months, she was able to master this and rise higher in math than ever before. Most importantly, Mary says she likes math and has her confidence back. We continue to work with Katia helping find and firm up the holes that were missed from years of neglect and giving her a head start on future material.
John is an athlete and usually does fine in math but is distracted by his busy sports schedule, work and interest in girls. With his high level of energy, he is rapidly getting bored by the low intensity of math homework compared to his other interests. Lately this has led to more conflict with his parents who doesn’t want his schooling to suffer with all his extra activities.
By monitoring his progress with our written evaluations they can watch for changes in his understanding before they become critical and start to build on themselves. John reports having to spend less time on his math now since he isn’t required to spend extra time on it when things are going well. He currently has no restrictions on his sports and is working 8 hours a week for spending money.
Henry is an 8th grader who likes art and is now having a much harder time in math. His grades on tests have been completely unpredictable but are now drifting downwards. His teacher sometimes “spot grades” the homework or picks one kids out to look at but generally only gives “completion grades.” The teacher is generally unavailable or offers lunch time help but really just goes over the correct answers and seems distant and disengaged.
By evaluating his work we were able to help his parents find the weaknesses in his work and understanding and is now using online practice problems with his parents that make the most of his time so he can maintain good grades and pursue his other interests. He and his parents now report less conflict and more time for rewarding family life.
Cheryl has always been near the top of her class taking AP classes and was planning on a career in science. This year she started losing interest and her grades slowly declined. She complained her teacher was boring and really didn’t want to be there. The teacher focused on teaching to the standardized tests with incomprehensible tricks to get the class good scores on the end of year state tests.
Evaluating her work we found that she was starting to miss key points. We suggested she begin online mentoring sessions to introduce her to related material at a higher and more challenging level with out-of-box math Olympiad problems and introduction to topics based on her interest. With her natural enthusiasm revitalized, she easily improved her grades and started using her class time quietly to work on math that suited her interests.
